SideKick purses and hip-bags
One-of-a-kind purses and hip bags, my SideKicks incorporate castoff odds and ends, from once-worn cowboy boots to recycled belts. They are made by hand with heavy-duty thread and copper and aluminum roofing rivets joined to mixed-metal hardware. Created in the early 1990s from worn, beloved boots in my attic, my bags went from a pastime to a calling after my sister’s death in 2012. A metaphor for hope, transformation, and the unpredictable course our journeys take, each piece is dedicated to the memory of my childhood sidekick, Marea, with a portion of sales given to Grace House-New Orleans, where women can find help in their journey towards recovery.
My work has appeared at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Cherry Creek Arts Festival (Denver), Bayou City Arts Festival (Houston), and the Crescent City Blues and Barbecue Festival (New Orleans). It has also been featured in the New Orleans Times-Picayune (23 April 2013), Biz New Orleans magazine (April 2015), The Atlanta Journal and Constitution (20 September 2015) and on News with a Twist, WNOE television (May 2015)
